Creative Collaborations in Music Awards

27 November 2001

The PRS Foundation and Visiting Arts launch a new series of Awards which will support creative collaborations between composers and music creators from the UK and overseas.

These Awards have been made possible thanks to the generous support of the PRS FoundationThe PRS Foundation and Visiting Arts are delighted to announce the launch of a new series of Awards which will support creative collaborations between composers and music creators from the UK and overseas.

The Creative Collaborations in Music Awards will fund UK residencies for foreign composers or music creators in order to enable UK and foreign music creators to have a period of joint exploration and creation. It is anticipated that the residencies will nurture and support the creation and performance of new music in the UK as well as helping diversify the range of music experience that is available to UK music creators, other music professionals, general audiences and young people in education.

The Awards also aim to heighten UK public awareness of the richness of the world's contemporary music practice and to help us celebrate the UK's cultural diversity. The Awards will support creative collaborations between organisations based in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and foreign composers and music creators based overseas.

Up to six Awards, up to a maximum of £6,500 will be available for projects taking place between 1 December 2001 and 1 April 2003.

The Creative Collaborations in Music Awards are part of Visiting Arts' ongoing commitment to developing opportunities for UK and foreign artists to work and develop together projects of mutual interest.

The Visiting Arts International Fellowship Programme for visual artists was launched in October 2000, with a residency at Spike Island for Tanya Abadjieva from Bulgaria. The Visiting Arts Fellow for the 2001 residency at Delfina Studio Trust, London, which begins in November, is for the young Palestinian artist Khalil Rabah from Ramallah.

The PRS Foundation is committed to supporting new music in as wide a range of contexts as possible. The Creative Collaborations in Music Awards is an important addition to opportunities available to the UK's music community though the PRSF's funding. The PRS Foundation's aspiration for the scheme is for the creators and performers of new music in the UK to be provided with new and exciting inspiration from abroad whilst developing lasting and fruitful collaborations on which to build in the future.

Nelson Fernandez, Head of Performing Arts & Training at Visiting Arts, says:

"This is an exciting opportunity for us to further nurture the growing interest and desire of UK artists and arts organisations to work with artists from overseas. We are immensely grateful to the PRS Foundation for the generous support and encouragement".

David Bedford, Chairman of the PRS Foundation says:

"The Creative Collaborations in Music Awards are an exciting addition to the opportunities offered through the Foundation's funding. The PRS Foundation is confident that through funding this initiative, the creators of new music in the UK will be inspired by and form sustainable links with composers and music creators from overseas. However we are also confident that the benefit will work both ways as visiting artists will experience the expertise and vibrancy of the creative music community in the UK".
